The Jeep Gladiator was reintroduced to the Jeep lineup as the only pickup truck offered by the brand in 2020, and has been wildly popular ever since. Jeeps are known for their versatility and the Gladiator also adds the capabilities of a truck, including towing. But how much can a Jeep Gladiator tow?
The Jeep Gladiator towing capacity ranges between 4,000 and 7,650 lbs depending on the engine and towing package selected.
There’s a bit more to know about how much a Jeep Gladiator can tow which we’ll cover in today’s guide.
What Is The Towing Capacity Of A Jeep Gladiator?
As we covered earlier, the Jeep Gladiator can tow a minimum of 4,000 lbs and a maximum of 7,650 lbs.
For the maximum towing capacity of 7,650 lbs you’ll need a Jeep Gladiator Sport or Sport S trim level combined with the automatic Pentastar V6 engine and Jeep’s Max Tow package installed.
Check out this video of the Jeep Gladiator’s towing functions being put to the test in the real world:
Jeep Gladiator Towing Capacity Factors
There are two main items that determine how much weight a Jeep Gladiator can pull: the engine and towing package selected.
The engine will determine how much power the vehicle has to pull towed weight, while the towing package includes the towing hardware, installation, and any additional modifications to the vehicle.
Jeep Gladiator Engine Specs
The Gladiator has two engine types offered with it: a 3.6 Liter Pentastar V6 engine and a 3.0 Liter V6 EcoDiesel engine.
3.6 Liter Pentastar V6 Engine
The 3.6L Pentastar V6 Jeep Gladiator engine (aka the 3.6 L V6 24V VVT engine) offers a max 285 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft of torque.
It comes in both automatic and manual versions and comes as the standard option in all trim levels of the Gladiator.
3.0 Liter V6 EcoDiesel Engine
The Gladiator’s 3.0 L V6 EcoDiesel engine has a max 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft of torque.
The EcoDiesel engine is automatic only and is optional on every trim level of the Gladiator.
Jeep Gladiator Tow Packages
Does The Jeep Gladiator Come With A Tow Hitch?
The Jeep Gladiator doesn’t automatically come with a tow hitch installed, so you’ll need to select an option when ordering one, or install one yourself after taking delivery.
Jeep offers two towing packages on the Jeep Gladiator: the Trailer-Tow package and the Max Tow package.
Deciding between the Jeep Gladiator tow package vs max tow package really depends on your specific needs.
Jeep Gladiator Trailer Tow Package
The trailer tow package adds the following items to your Gladiator:
- Class IV hitch receiver
- Trailer hitch zoom on backup camera
- 240-Amp alternator
- Heavy-duty engine cooling system
It’s important to note that the trailer tow package does not increase the Jeep Gladiator’s towing capacity at all.
It simply adds the towing functionality and additional features listed above.
Jeep Gladiator Max Tow Package
The Gladiator max tow package includes all the towing features of the trailer tow package, and also includes the following:
- 4.10:1 Axle ratio
- All Terrain tires
- Trac-Lok limited slip differential
- Wide fender flares
- Increased gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 6,250 lbs
The max tow package is only available on the Sport and Sport S trim levels and requires the selection of the 3.6 Liter Pentastar V6 automatic engine.

Jeep Gladiator Towing: What Do I Need?
If you plan on towing anything with your Gladiator, you’ll need a tow hitch and wiring harness.
Depending on what you’re towing, you’re going to need a ball mount (aka a trailer ball hitch) so you can attach items for towing.
Make sure to get the right trailer ball size that matches your hitch and trailer.
Trailer hitches come in different hitch classes, which are rated for different vehicle sizes and weight limits.
The Jeep Gladiator uses a Class 3 hitch.
Here’s a great option for a Jeep Gladiator tow hitch:
- VERSATILE RECEIVER. Add a useful hitch receiver to the front end of your vehicle with this front mount receiver hitch. The standard 2-inch receiver enables you to attach a snow plow, cargo carrier, bike rack, tow hook, winch mount or other tow accessory
- RELIABLE STRENGTH. This front hitch is rated for 3,500 lbs. GTW and 350 lbs. tongue weight. It is also rated for 9,000 lbs. straight-line pull capacity for recovery towing and winch applications (limited to lowest-rated towing component)
- TESTED BUILD. This front mount hitch is fully tested for your safety at our Detroit engineering facility. We test our front trailer hitch designs according to SAE J684 specifications
- CORROSION-RESISTANT. For superior protection against rust, chipping and UV damage, this front hitch is covered in a dual-layer of rust-resistant A-coat that coats the hitch inside and out, and a highly durable black powder coat
- EASY INSTALLATION. This front tow hitch is engineered with a vehicle-specific design to fit select models of the Jeep Wrangler JL and Gladiator
Here’s a great ball mount option so you can hook up different types of trailers for towing with your Jeep Gladiator:
- Product 1: HIGHLY VERSATILE. Adapt your trailer hitch to any towing situation with the highly versatile and easily adjustable design of this adjustable ball mount. The channel-style shank can be flipped to provide up to a 6-inch drop or 5-1/4-inch rise.
- Product 1: SMOOTH TOWING. For a smoother, quieter ride while towing your trailer, this adjustable drop hitch comes with a built-in anti-rattle feature, deterring vibrations, chucking and rattling at the coupling point.
- Product 1: POWERFUL BUILD. Constructed from high-strength steel, this adjustable hitch ball mount is ready to work. The 2-inch ball is rated for a capacity of 10,000 lbs., and the 2-5/16-inch ball for 14,000 lbs.
- Product 1: PRECISE FIT. This adjustable ball hitch comes with a standard shank to fit virtually any standard 2-inch x 2-inch trailer hitch receiver. It's perfect for most class 3, class 4 and class 5 hitches.
- Product 2: DEPENDABLE SECURITY. To protect your trailer and trailer hitch ball mount from theft, this locking hitch pin is made with high-strength steel construction.
Jeep Gladiator Tow Hitch Installation
If you’re considering having a tow hitch added to your Jeep Gladiator, expect to pay between $100 and $200 to have a tow package professionally installed (excluding the cost of the tow hitch and wiring harness).
If you’re handy and looking to save money, you can install the trailer hitch and wiring harness yourself.
Always follow the manufacturer’s directions and use proper safety precautions.
Here’s a great video walkthrough on a Jeep Gladiator trailer hitch installation:
Hitch Receiver Vs Rear Step Bumper Towing
No matter what, you’re going to need some sort of tow hitch to tow anything with your Gladiator.
The Jeep Gladiator allows for bumper towing, which just means you can mount a tow hitch ball right on the bumper rather than installing a hitch mounted to the frame.
The Jeep Gladiator’s bumper towing capacity is 3,500 lbs.
Here’s a good option for a bumper-mounted trailer hitch for all Jeep Gladiator models:
- DEPENDABLE STRENGTH. This trailer hitch is rated for 5,000 lbs. gross trailer weight and 500 lbs. tongue weight (limited to lowest-rated towing component)
- VERSATILE DESIGN. This class 3 hitch equips your vehicle with a standard 2-inch x 2-inch hitch receiver, allowing for a wide variety of towing options. It can accept a ball mount, cargo carrier, bike rack, tow hook and much more
- FULLY TESTED. Every CURT class 3 trailer hitch design is tested in real-world, on-vehicle conditions at our Detroit engineering facility. Aftermarket hitches are tested according to SAE J684 standards for the utmost safety while hauling
- RUST, CHIP, UV-RESISTANT. This tow hitch is protected with a unique dual-coat finish of rust-resistant liquid Bonderite and highly durable black powder coat. The two finishes are co-cured together for exceptional resistance to rust, chipping and UV rays
- EASY TO INSTALL. This hitch offers a custom, factory fit on select model years of the Jeep Gladiator JT (Hitch is not to be used in Weight Distribution Applications)
How Can I Tell If My Jeep Gladiator Has A Tow Package Installed?
You can start by looking under the rear bumper of your Gladiator to see if you see a trailer hitch or trailer ball.
That will give you a good indication of if you have a tow package already installed on your vehicle.
However, there’s more to it than simply looking. Once you confirm the presence of a tow hitch, you need to determine other factors that affect your towing, like an enhanced alternator, transmission cooling package, or other features.
You can research this by checking the paperwork that came with your vehicle or taking it to a local dealer to see what’s installed.
Make sure to have your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) handy if you call the dealer so they can look up the exact specs and whether or not your vehicle has any towing packages or features installed on it.
