There’s a bit more to know about Jeep Wrangler towing capabilities which we’ll cover in today’s guide.

Jeep Wrangler Braked Vs. Unbraked Towing Capacity
All vehicles have different towing capacities based on whether or not you’re towing a trailer that has trailer brakes installed.
Trailer brakes allow the trailer to stop faster than if only the vehicle is using its brakes, allowing the vehicle to tow more weight, so braked towing capacity will always be higher than unbraked towing capacity.
Jeep Wrangler Braked Towing Capacity: 1,000 lbs. – 3,500 lbs.
Jeep Wrangler Unbraked Towing Capacity: 1,000 lbs.
Jeep Wrangler Towing Capacity Factors
There are a few factors that affect the Jeep Wrangler tow capacity.
Generation and Model Year
The towing range of Jeep Wrangler trucks seemed to follow a trend for a certain number of years, then it would shift as new engines or other enhancements were changed out in the lineup.
For example, the later year models of Jeep Wrangler could pull a range from 2,000 to 3,500 lbs, but previous model years had a starting tow capacity of only 1,000 pounds.
We’ll cover this later in our guide.
Engine Options
The engine options for Jeep Wranglers didn’t change a whole lot throughout different generations, and they also didn’t make a significant difference in the towing capability.
2-Door Vs 4-Door
A big factor in how much weight a Jeep Wrangler can pull is whether it’s a 2-door or a 4-door model.
The main reason for this is that for the most recent years, the 4-door model was dubbed the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, while the 2-door models had strictly the Wrangler name.
Jeep Wrangler Engine Specs
The current generation of the Jeep Wrangler has three engine options.
2.0 Liter Turbo 4-Cylinder Engine
The most basic Jeep Wrangler engine is the EC1, which is a 2.0 Liter Intercooled Turbo Premium Unleaded I-4 engine.
This engine produces 270 hp and 295 lb.-ft of torque, paired with a 8-speed automatic transmission.
The EC1 engine is only available on the Sahara, Sport RHD, and High Altitude Trims.
3.6 Liter V6 Engine
The most common Jeep Wrangler engine is the ERC, which is a 3.6 Liter Regular Unleaded V6 engine.
This engine produces 285 hp and 260 lb.-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The ERC engine is only available on the Sport, Sport S, Willys, Willys Sport, and Rubicon trim levels.
6.4 Liter V8 Engine
The most premium Jeep Wrangler engine is the ESG, which is a 6.4 Liter Premium Unleaded V8 engine.
This engine produces 470 hp and 470 lb.-ft of torque, paired with a 8-speed automatic transmission.
The ESG engine is only available on the Rubicon 392 trim level.
Jeep Wrangler Tow Package Info
Does The Jeep Wrangler Have A Tow Package?
The towing package for Jeep Wrangler is called the “Trailer-Tow and Heavy-Duty Electrical Group”, and is available on all trim levels of the Wrangler.
The Jeep Wrangler towing package includes the following:
- Class II tow hitch receiver
- 4 and 7-pin Wiring Harness
- Auxiliary Swiches
- 240-Amp Alternator
- 700-Amp Maintenance-Free Battery
Can You Install A Trailer Hitch On a Jeep Wrangler?
If you plan on towing anything with your Jeep Wrangler, you’ll need a tow hitch and wiring harness.
Depending on what you’re towing, you’re going to need a ball mount (aka a trailer ball hitch) so you can attach items for towing.
Make sure to get the right trailer ball size that matches your hitch and trailer.
Jeep Wrangler Tow Hitch
Trailer hitches come in different hitch classes, which are rated for different vehicle sizes and weight limits.
The Jeep Wrangler uses a Class 2 hitch.
Here’s a great option for a Class II Jeep Wrangler trailer hitch:
- Custom designed to be compatible with factory bumper of 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK (Both 2 door & 4 door models.) Not compatible with JL.
- 2 inch receiver with ratings of 3500 Lb Gross Trailer Weight; 350 Lb Tongue Weight.
- Black powder coated for long lasting corrosion resistance.
- Includes one hitch cover to protect receiver tube when not in use. Keep mud dirt and pests out!
- Plug & Play wiring harness with factory appearance
Here’s a great ball mount option so you can hook up different types of trailers for towing with your Wrangler:
- DEPENDABLE STRENGTH. Rated to tow 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight and 350 pounds tongue weight, this ball hitch offers dependability for your towing setup (weight capacity may change if trailer ball is removed)
- VERSATILE USE. This trailer hitch ball mount comes with a 1-1/4-inch shank to fit virtually any industry-standard 1-1/4-inch receiver. The ball mount has a 3-1/4-inch drop, 2-inch diameter ball, 1/2-inch hitch pin hole and 7-1/4-inch overall length
- READY TO TOW. Hitching up your trailer is easy with this ready-to-use trailer hitch ball mount. It comes with a pre-attached tow ball for ready coupling and a trailer hitch pin to securely mount onto your hitch receiver
- CORROSION-RESISTANT. For long-lasting use, this ball hitch is protected with a durable black powder coat finish, and the trailer ball has a polished chrome plating. These finishes resist damage from rain, dirt, road salt and other corrosive threats
- EASY TO INSTALL. To install the trailer hitch ball mount on your vehicle, simply insert the shank into your vehicle's 1-1/4-inch hitch receiver. The rounded shank makes installation easy
Jeep Wrangler Tow Hitch Installation
If you’re considering having a tow hitch added to your Wrangler, expect to pay between $100 and $200 to have a tow package professionally installed (excluding the cost of the tow hitch and wiring harness).
If you’re handy and looking to save money, you can install the trailer hitch and wiring harness yourself.
Always follow the manufacturer’s directions and use proper safety precautions.
Here’s a great video walkthrough on a Jeep Wrangler trailer hitch installation:
Hitch Receiver Vs Rear Step Bumper Towing
Some vehicles allow for bumper towing, which means you can mount a tow hitch ball directly on the bumper instead of installing a tow hitch to the vehicle’s frame.
Can I Bumper Tow With A Jeep Wrangler?
The Jeep Wrangler does not allow for bumper towing, so you’ll need to use a frame-mounted hitch.
How Do I Know If My Jeep Wrangler Has A Tow Package?
You can start by looking under the rear bumper of your Wrangler to see if you notice a trailer hitch or trailer ball.
That will give you a good indication of if you have a tow hitch already installed on your Wrangler.
Another way to research this is by checking the paperwork that came with your vehicle or taking it to a local dealer to see what’s installed.
Make sure to have your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) handy if you call the dealer so they can look up the exact specs and whether or not your vehicle has any towing packages or features installed on it.
Wrangler Towing Stats By Model Year and Generation
5th Generation: 2023 and Beyond
The 5th generation Jeep Wrangler will have the same 3,500 pound max towing capacity as the prior generation.
Although it is getting a complete redesign, the Wrangler will be sticking with the same powertrain that was in the 2019-2022 models, which is the 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 engine.
There also may be a hybrid engine added to the lineup, but this wouldn’t surpass the 7,500 pound tow capacity of the 2023 Jeep Wrangler.
4th Generation (Jeep Wrangler JL): 2018 – Present
The 4th generation Jeep Wrangler JL came in several different trim levels.
There different engine options like the 3.6L Pentastar V6 and 2.0L I-4, and some higher trims had a 6.4L V8 like the Rubicon 392.

The 3rd generation Wrangler was also the first one manufactured and designed by Diamler-Chrysler.
Features from prior generation stayed, like part-time 4-wheel drive.

The Jeep Wrangler TJ trim levels included the SE, Golden Eagle, X, Sahara, Apex, and Rubicon.
There was also a limited edition 60th Anniversary trim in 2001, and a 65th Anniversary trim in 2006.

The Jeep Wrangler YJ engine options through 1990 were a 2.5L AMC 4-cylinder and a 4.2L AMC V6 engine.
In 1991, the upgraded engine option shifted to a fuel-injected 4.0L AMC 242 engine, with part-time four-wheel drive standard on all engine types.
Anti-lock brakes were added in 1992, and a three-speed automatic transmission became an option in 1994.
